Trial Conversions
A trial is when someone signs up to try your product without paying yet. It matters, because a trial is a real step toward becoming a customer, but it is not a sale. Conversion Bridge tracks trials as their own kind of conversion so you can measure them without mixing them up with your revenue.
Why Trials Are Tracked Separately
Before, a free trial was recorded as a purchase worth nothing. That caused two problems.
Your purchase count was too high, because every trial was counted as a sale that never happened. And your average order value was dragged down, because all those zero-value "sales" were averaged in with your real ones.
Tracking trials as their own event fixes both. Your purchase numbers only include actual purchases, and your trials are still measured, just separately.
Turning On Trial Tracking
Trial tracking is set up per integration, wherever the plugin supports trials.
- Go to Settings → Conversion Bridge → Integrations
- Find the plugin you want to track
- Tick the Trial event and give it a label if you want one
- Click Save Changes
If you were already tracking trials as purchases before this, your existing settings carry over automatically, so trial tracking continues without you needing to set it up again.
Like every other event, a trial has a conversion label and a conversion value you can customize. You can read more in the Conversion Label and Conversion Value guide.
Where Trials Show Up in Each Platform
Each analytics and ad platform has its own list of event names, and not all of them have one for trials. Conversion Bridge sends the closest match each platform offers, so you don't have to work it out yourself.
| Platform | Trial is recorded as |
|---|---|
| Meta | StartTrial |
| TikTok | StartTrial |
| Snapchat Ads | START_TRIAL |
| OpenAI Ads | trial_started |
| Google Analytics 4 | sign_up |
| Google Tag Manager | sign_up |
Signup |
|
| Reddit Ads | SignUp |
| Awin | Lead conversion |
| Growify | Lead |
Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and OpenAI Ads all have a real trial event, so a trial arrives there as exactly that.
The rest don't. Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Pinterest, and Reddit have no trial event in their standard lists, so a trial is recorded as a sign-up instead, which is the closest thing they offer. In Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager your trial label is passed along as the sign-up method, so you can still tell trials apart from ordinary registrations in your reports.
Awin and Growify both treat a trial as a lead, since a trial has no sale value to pay commission on.
Trials and Conversion Values
A trial is sent with no value on purpose.
It is tempting to send the price of the plan someone is trying, but that would report money you have not been paid and might never be. Your revenue reporting would be wrong, and any bidding you have set up to chase revenue would be chasing numbers that aren't real.
If you want to know what a trial is worth to you, the better approach is to measure how many trials turn into paying customers, then judge the value of a trial from that.
